Nirmal Jayaram, a Data Scientist at Google, graduated from Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and an MS in statistics in 2010. He has been working at Google since Oct 2012 and is focusing on Display advertising. He manages a team of around 10 data scientists and 10 software engineers, that focuses on building advertiser facing products.

Presentation Description

Display advertising is a complex ecosystem with several players: users, advertisers, publishers, competitors, and others. Advertisers have several objectives and constraints, and the role of the ‘bidding team’ is to meet these with effectiveness and robustness. We need to combine business knowledge and technical knowledge in statistics and operations research to formulate and solve problems in this space and build large-scale engineering systems that can apply these solutions in real time to achieve advertiser goals. We tightly integrated data scientists and software engineers who work together to make bidding successful. This talk will describe sample problems we face in this space, and how this tight coupling between data scientists and software engineers helps us move fast
